First Impressions :: essays research papers

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I can remember the first time that I’ve ever met a white person before. My first time was in sixth grade when I went to Academy school in Glastonbury. Sure I’d seen them in movies, at the stores, and maybe I had a white teacher, but the first time I’d ever interacted with a white person was that year.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I was an exceptional student then. Too smart for my grade they said. My English teacher in 5th grade, Mrs. Wimberly, told me I needed to get out of the Hartford Public School system. She suggested to my mother that I try out a program called Project Concern. This was a program that brought inner city youth out into suburban schools so as to give equal opportunities for education.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  My mother applied to this and was informed before the end of my fifth grade school year that I was accepted and would be going to school in Glastonbury. Glastonbury!? Where the heck was that? I didn’t even know such a place existed in my small little world. The farthest I’d ever been was East Hartford or maybe the Westfarms mall, and I just saw those as extensions of Hartford. I was a little worried as to what this experience was going to be like.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I told everyone at Annie Fisher, my elementary school in Hartford, the news at the lunch table one day. While unwrapping my lunch from those plastic cases, and opening my carton of low-fat milk I broke the news. Some of the girls at the table began to say, â€Å"Oh we’re gonna miss you Chancellor!† Then the guys chimed in. My one friend, Barry, informed me that I was going to a mostly white school only he put it in other terms, â€Å"Ha ha, you’re going to be going to school with a bunch of crackers!† I’d never heard the term before, but another kid chimed in through mouthfuls of his dry salami sandwich, â€Å"You’re going to a white school!?†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I was a bit confused. What was this? I was never told I’d be going to school with white people. I’d never in talked to a white person before. They seem like some abstract, far off idea that I could not yet comprehend. I began to get nervous sitting at that lunch table, with my feet sticking to the dried juice on the floor. I asked them, â€Å"What are they like?

Competency Statement Essay

To ensure a well-run, purposeful program that is responsive to participants needs. The observation tool that I have provided for Resource V is used to assess the developmental growth in Discovery Preschool children. It is designed to assist teachers in observing, recording and understanding a child’s skills, knowledge, behavior and accomplishments. It allows both parents and teachers to understand what children know and can do. Assessments are completed every fall, winter and spring with parent-teacher conferences to follow. Parents and teachers use these conferences to discuss the assessment. Observation and documentation are important parts of program management because it allows parents and teachers to discuss what children are learning and understanding. There are five areas that are assessed; physical and motor development, social and emotional development, approaches toward learning, language and communication skills and cognition/ general knowledge. Teachers use these assessments to record progress over time. It allows them to see how each child is developing which area, if any, parents and teachers need of focus more on. It also helps teachers provide developmentally appropriate lessons and materials for the children. I ensure that I am accurately and objectively observing and tracking each child’s developmental and learning progress by providing lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate. The assessment is not completed by testing the children. I use my observations and collect classwork don by the children to assess them. I also constantly interact with the children and set up activities that enable the children to demonstrate specific skills and integrate them into everyday activities. For example, while outside with the children, I will play catch with the children. I will observe if they  can catch, throw, and kick a ball. I also ask them various questions throughout the day like, â€Å"What color is the school bus?† or â€Å"Can you tell me what shape this cracker is?† I record all my observations on index cards and place each one in the child’s portfolio. Assessments are a very important tool for both parents and teachers to monitor a child’s know ledge and development. With this documentation parents and teachers can work together to guide children into becoming well- rounded individuals.

How The Constant Drilling For Oil And Extraction Of Minerals

Indigenous Beings and Animals: Furthermore, In â€Å"Oil Extraction and Indigenous Livelihoods in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon† the article speaks about how the constant drilling for oil and extraction of minerals, constantly penetrates into the lives of indigenous people, undermining their lives and well being. This article proves my point that by the constant need to destroy our planet by extracting oil, the lives of those around it are being affected. Factors such as pollution and contamination as well as deforestation causes the indigenous people to move from their homes, and it affects those that don t, through diseases and other side effects of the exploitation of oil. Kantian ethics is about having â€Å"rational conception of ourselves which commits us to autonomy, human equality, and cosmopolitan community† (Wood, 177). Therefore, if our society would actually follow Kantian ethics or tried to use its concepts in our actions, humans could potentially live in a more ethical society. A society that would no longer undermine the standard of living of indigenous people and take them into consideration in any actions or plans they make. By doing this, a cosmopolitan society can be reached, where the lives of the indigenous beings are valued, while simultaneously committing us to autonomy, which frees us from the restraints of money. By not being so dependent on oil for income, Ecuador is being freed from having to destroy its land and the affecting the beings that live there. Only with this being said, would we be able to live in an ethical society. Correspondingly, In Alva Juan Jose and Nastenka Calle’s article Drilling Plans Endanger Yasunà ­ s Biodiversity†, which revolves around the endangerment of the vast bio-diversity in the area, expresses my concerns on the dangers of oil extraction.
