There are a number of mistakes that students make on the ACT Math section that can be avoided with proper test prep and guidance. For students not as strong in math, or confident in their abilities, frustration with the ACT math structure, content, formulas, and calculations can be mistaken for a weakness and, as a result, those students become unmotivated. In reality, it’s simple to overcome these hurdles and common mistakes can, and, in the end, dramatically boost students’ scores on the ACT Math section. The first step in preparing for the ACT Math section, and correcting common errors, is to become familiar with the section content and structure. The best way to prepare for the SAT or ACT is to take a diagnostic exam and continue to take practice tests, under timed conditions, in order to track your progress and adjust your test prep strategy if needed. Next, it’s important to recognize when you’re making mistakes that can work against you when taking the ACT Math section. Here are some common ACT Math section mistakes that many students make during their test prep and on test day. Not Skipping and Revisiting Questions The Math section of the ACT consists of 60 questions to be done in 60 minutes, an average of one minute per question. A mistake many students make is working through each problem in order, rather than skipping around based on whether they are able to quickly solve it or not. Rather than trying to do a question per minute, in order, it may be easier to aim for strategies that can facilitate getting as many questions right as possible. Students who are used to having these formulas provided in their regular school work often make the mistake of not familiarizing themselves with the proper formulas before taking the ACT Math section. Formulas that you should know ahead of time include: Slope-intercept formula Quadratic formula Area of triangles Pythagorean Theorem Special types of triangles (30-60-90, isosceles, equilateral, etc.) Area of a circle Circumference Area of a sector Area of a rectangle Area of a parallelogram Area of trapezoid Trigonometry functions (sin, cos, tan, SOHCAHTOA) You can study these by creating flashcards, making your ownquiz, or taking turns quizzing friends. Relying Too Much On Calculators Approved calculators are allowed on the ACT (TI-30 until 84, Casio Prizm GII), but test designers note that all questions can technically be solved without a calculator. Be sure to review thefull ACT calculator policy. It’s best to think of your calculator as a helpful tool, but not a crutch. Relying too much on your calculator can actually hinder your timing, rather than helping you work faster. As you practice for the Math ACT, try to gauge your use of the calculator. If you think you are using it for more problems than you are not, try to identify why. Take a practice test and note each question on which you use a calculator. Then, when you’re finished with the section, look at which types of questions they are. This could reveal some gaps in your content knowledge that are easily remedied. It is always better in the long-term to fill in these gaps before the test rather than use your calculator unnecessarily on the actual test. Second Guessing Your Mental Math When working on a problem, always try to use mental math first before reaching for your calculator. For example, when you’ve finally reduced an equation down, you should be able to solve forXwithout using your calculator. However, at this stage, any students second-guess themselves and use their calculator to double-check their work. You may think you are doing yourself a favor by checking your mental math with your calculator, but really you are eating up precious time and sometimes even putting yourself at risk of making careless errors by trusting your calculator more than you trust yourself. When taking practice tests work on relying on your mental math and building up your confidence in your abilities leading up to the test day. Not Writing Down Calculations There will undoubtedly be some questions that you immediately know how to solve quickly and on these questions you are probably tempted to fill in the answer as quickly as possible and move on. While time is definitely of the essence and your instincts aren’t completely off base, you should write down at least part of your mental or calculator calculations. Why? Because if you arrive at an answer that doesn’t seem quite right, or that isn’t one of the answer options, you will want to know where you went wrong. Going back to re-solve the question from scratch will ultimately cost you more time. If you’ve written down part of your calculations, at least you may have a better idea of where you went wrong. Maybe you pressed a wrong button on your calculator, or maybe you added in your head instead of multiplying. Whatever the case may be, hopefully, you've notated enough of the equating that you do not have to start again from the beginning to find or check your answer. Often time teachers and administrators do not know their students are in foster care, and are unaware of why they may have negative behavior in the classroom. The United States continually emphasizes the importance of attending college, but for many foster children post-secondary education is unattainable. This growth is due to the fact that they are generally able to identify their faults and weaknesses as well as understand their strengths. They accept the fact that they have these deficiencies, however, they are not satisfied with them, therefore they attempt to fix them or change them. She gained her BA in English Literature from the University of Jordan, Amman, before going in 1984 to Britain where she completed an MA in creative writing at Lancaster University. She was awarded the first Ph.D. in creative and critical writing in 1990 by the University of East Anglia. She published her first novel Nisanit in 1988, which was about a girl and was set in Middle East countries. Her second novel Pillars of Salt was published in 1996, this was translated into many languages such as German, Romanian and Dutch. This story was really strong in showing how females in the Arab area are mistreated and weak compared to the males. In addition to this we see how Fadia takes political aspects of the world into her book like how in Pillars of Salt the Character Maha is deeply affected by the death of her husband due to the political war at that time. Though again we see that after she has lost her husband she is so vulnerable to pain and torture from the society. The Never-Ending School The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be. Everything is constantly changing, our world, our culture, and our education. The fact that the traditional school calendar may have worked many years ago does not mean that it is the best thing for the younger generations today. Concerned parents, teachers and the government are constantly searching for ways to develop the education of schools in America. That is why I am proposing to make the switch from the traditional school calendar to a year-round education. It would eliminate issues such as overcrowding, the costliness of the traditional calendar, and interrupted education. Year-round education is a modified school calendar that reorganizes the school year to provide more continuous learning by dividing the long summer vacation into shorter, more frequent breaks. It was stated in an article by the NAYRE (National Association for Year Round Education), that at the turn of the century there was over a billion teenagers attending high school. This statistic introduces the question Where are we going to put them all? Well, by implementing the year round systems there are many different possible solutions to this question. One imparticular would be to revise the class schedules. This advantage has made YRE particularly attractive in areas that are experiencing a rapid rise in population. It is most often applied in schools that are hit the hardest by overcrowding. In order for YRE to increase the capacity of a school, it must operate on a multi-track program. This means that the facility embraces three, four or five different calendars, with a portion of stu dents and faculty assigned to each. The instructional blocks and vacation times are staggered so that there is always a group of students on break. It can increase a school's capacity by as much as 33 percent. This advantage has made year-round education particularly attractive in areas that are experiencing a rapid rise in population. Soccorro Independent School District in El Paso, Texas, began its conversion to year-round education in 1991. School officials looked to YRE to assist in accommodating a rapidly rising enrollment. Using a four-track system, they were able to increase the capacity of the most overcrowded schools by one-third. Based on their success, all of the schools in the district switched to some form of a year-round calendar in the next three years. Soccorro administrators and faculty stress that they consider the reorganization of the calendar to have as many economic benefits as well. By not having to build a new school or add on to an existing facility has been for the most part responsible for the yearly increase in the number of schools switching to a year-round calendar over the past decade. The chief reason, however, for converting to a yearround education is to avoid the cost of building a new school. Expenses would be incurred for building design, engineering, construction, and furnishing, as well as for infrastructure reconstruction (streets, sewers, water, utilities, and furniture.) In 1987, a study for the California State Board of Education indicated that it would cost nearly $4 million to build a 24-classroom elementary school (720 students), and more than $6 million to build a secondary school addition to accommodate 720 students. The Oxnard (CA) Unified School District converted to year-round education in 1976. In the 1984-85 school year, its elementary enrollment increased by 644 students. If the district had been on the traditional nine-month calendar, it would have needed an additional school, at a cost of $5 million. It is believed that by converting to year-round education the district saved $16 million in new building costs over a 13-year period. Another example is the Pleasant Valley School District where officials are budgeting $71 million on a building project because classroom space is needed to get their kindergarten kids out of the churches that are currently substituting for their classrooms. That's an important concern, but with the Pleasant Valley Board's wasteful $71 million building program, the kindergarten kids are stuck in the churches for at least two years. However, Implementing year-round schooling now would take the kids out of the churches, and it would do it now, not in two years.
